Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.
Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors are granted the right to question specific calls from the official, mirroring the practice already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review other situations, including:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.
A Recent Example
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
